What is hard drive destruction?
Hard drive destruction is the physical damaging of data-bearing media according to an agreed method so that the device is no longer intended for normal use. It is different from deleting files, formatting a drive or logically wiping data.

The right route depends on the media, its condition, the required outcome and whether the device is intended for reuse. Do not select a method only because it sounds more severe.

What types of drives can be included in a destruction project?
A project may involve magnetic HDDs, solid-state drives, removable flash media, tapes or storage embedded in equipment. We confirm the accepted media and suitable route from the actual asset list before work begins.
Is deleting or formatting a drive the same as destroying it?
No. File deletion and formatting are logical actions and are not physical destruction. They should also not be described as verified data erasure unless the required sanitisation process has actually been completed and recorded.
Should HDDs and SSDs use the same destruction method?
Not automatically. HDDs and SSDs have different internal construction, so the required method should be assessed against the media type and intended outcome rather than applying one assumption to every device.
Can hard drives be destroyed on-site?
On-site or off-site arrangements depend on Destruc's available service options, equipment, site access, quantity and project requirements. Confirm the required location when requesting the quotation.
Can serial numbers be recorded before destruction?
Serial-number or asset-tag capture can be included when agreed in scope and when labels remain present and readable. The required identifiers and treatment of mismatches should be defined before collection.
Is a certificate of destruction provided?
The required destruction evidence should be confirmed as part of the project scope. A collection record, inventory and certificate serve different purposes, so specify what your internal team needs before the work is priced.
What happens to the remaining equipment?
The surrounding laptop, server or storage chassis may follow a separate reuse, recovery or recycling route after the media decision. Physical destruction of a drive does not automatically determine the outcome for the wider asset.
